But it is also sprawling, and choosing the right neighborhood to stay in can make the difference between a wonderful trip and a frustrating one. As a Bangkok local, here is my guide to every major area.

1. Sukhumvit Road — Best for First-Timers
Sukhumvit is Bangkok’s main commercial and tourist artery. The BTS Skytrain runs directly above Sukhumvit Road, making it the most convenient base for exploring the city. The road is long — different sections have different characters.
Asok / Nana (Soi 2-21)
The most central and convenient section. Asok BTS station intersects with Sukhumvit MRT station — you can reach almost anywhere in Bangkok from here. Terminal 21 shopping mall, Soi Cowboy nightlife, and hundreds of restaurants are within walking distance.
- Budget: 800-1,500 THB ($23-$43 USD). Try Ibis Bangkok Sukhumvit 4 or Ambassador Hotel.
- Mid-range: 1,500-3,000 THB ($43-$86 USD). Try Grand Mercure Bangkok Asoke or Park Society Hotel.
- Luxury: 3,000-5,000+ THB ($86-$143+ USD). Try JW Marriott, Sheraton Grande, or Westin Grande Sukhumvit.
Thonglor / Ekkamai (Soi 50-65)
The trendy, hipster end of Sukhumvit. Thonglor (Soi 55) and Ekkamai (Soi 63) are packed with stylish cafes, craft cocktail bars, Japanese restaurants, and boutique shops. This is where young, affluent Bangkok residents go out. Quieter than Asok, more local feel.
- Budget: 1,000-2,000 THB ($29-$57 USD). Try Mystic Place or boutique hostels.
- Mid-range: 2,000-4,000 THB ($57-$114 USD). Try Mercure Bangkok Siam or S31 Hotel.

Phrom Phong (Soi 22-39)
A quieter section between Asok and Thonglor. Emporium and EmQuartier shopping malls are here, along with Benjasiri Park (one of the few green spaces in the area). Good for families and longer stays.
2. Old City / Rattanakosin — Best for Culture
The historical heart of Bangkok, where the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, and the National Museum are located. This area has no BTS/MRT access (the nearest is Sanam Chai MRT on the Blue Line), but it is walkable and atmospheric. Streets are narrower, older, and quieter at night.
- Budget: 500-1,000 THB ($14-$29 USD). Try Rambuttri Village Inn or Napark Urban Hostel.
- Mid-range: 1,000-2,500 THB ($29-$71 USD). Try Bhimann Inn or Old Bangkok Inn.
- Luxury: 2,500-5,000 THB ($71-$143 USD). Try Sala Rattanakosin (riverside, views of Wat Arun) or Chakrabongse Villas.
Tip: The Old City is not connected to the BTS Skytrain. You will rely on taxis, tuk-tuks, or the Chao Phraya Express boat. If you plan to spend most of your time at temples and historical sites, this is the best area. If you want easy access to malls, nightlife, and the rest of the city, stay on Sukhumvit instead.
3. Khao San Road — Best for Backpackers
Khao San Road is the world’s most famous backpacker street. It is loud, chaotic, cheap, and fun. Street food vendors, bars with bucket cocktails, tailors, fake ID sellers, tattoo shops, and souvenir stalls line the street. The surrounding area (Soi Rambuttri, Phra Athit) is quieter and more charming.
- Budget: 300-800 THB ($8.50-$23 USD). Dorm beds from 200 THB ($5.70 USD). Try Khao San Park Hotel, Rambuttri Village Inn, or countless guesthouses.
- Mid-range: 800-1,500 THB ($23-$43 USD). Try Dang Derm Hotel or Khaosan Business Inn.
- Luxury: Not really a thing here. For luxury, go to Riverside.
Who should stay here: Backpackers, solo travellers, and anyone who wants to meet other travellers. Who should avoid it: Families, light sleepers, and anyone who dislikes crowds and noise.
4. Silom / Sathorn — Best for Nightlife and Business
Silom is Bangkok’s financial district by day and entertainment district by night. Patpong (the famous go-go bar street) is here, but so is the excellent Silom night market and some of the city’s best street food on Soi Convent and Soi Si Phraya. Lumphini Park, Bangkok’s largest green space, is in Silom.
- Budget: 800-1,500 THB ($23-$43 USD). Try Ibis Bangkok Silom or Silom Serene.
- Mid-range: 1,500-3,000 THB ($43-$86 USD). Try Amora Hotel or B2 Silom.
- Luxury: 3,000-6,000 THB ($86-$172 USD). Try Sofitel So Bangkok, Banyan Tree (rooftop bar on 61st floor), or Dusit Thani.
5. Siam — Best for Shoppers
Siam is the heart of Bangkok’s shopping district. Siam Paragon, Siam Center, Siam Discovery, MBK Center, and CentralWorld are all here. The BTS interchange (Siam station) makes it the most connected spot in the city. Good for shoppers who want to drop bags and keep shopping.
- Budget: 800-1,500 THB ($23-$43 USD). Try Novotel Bangkok on Siam Square or Ibis Siam.

By night, Yaowarat Road transforms into one of the world’s greatest street food streets. The MRT Blue Line now has a station at Wat Mangkon, making it much more accessible.

For First-Timers: Sukhumvit (Asok area)
Asok gives you the BTS and MRT intersection, walking distance to Terminal 21 mall, Soi Cowboy nightlife, and countless restaurants. You can get anywhere in the city from here. Stay at the Ibis Sukhumvit 4 (budget) or JW Marriott (luxury).
For Culture Lovers: Old City / Riverside
Stay near the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. Walk to temples in the morning, take the river boat to sightsee, and enjoy the quieter, historic atmosphere. Sala Rattanakosin is the standout choice — riverside with direct views of Wat Arun at sunset.
For Backpackers: Khao San / Soi Rambuttri
Unbeatable for budget and social scene. Stay on Soi Rambuttri (quieter than Khao San Road itself) for a more pleasant experience. Budget 300-600 THB ($8.50-$17 USD) per night.
Practical Tips
- Always check distance to BTS/MRT: If your hotel is more than a 10-minute walk from a station, you will depend on taxis and tuk-tuks, which are slow in Bangkok traffic.
- Book early for peak season: December and January are the busiest months. Book 1-2 months in advance for the best rates.
- Use Agoda and Booking.com: These are the most popular booking platforms in Thailand and often have the best rates for Thai hotels.
- Taxi from airport: Use the official taxi queue at Suvarnabhumi Airport. Flat rate plus tollway (about 400-500 THB / $11-$14 USD total). Avoid touts inside the terminal.
- Airport Rail Link: From Suvarnabhumi, the City Line costs 45 THB ($1.30 USD) to Phaya Thai BTS. Cheaper and often faster than a taxi during rush hour.
