Koh Lipe: Thailand’s Maldives in the Andaman Sea

Koh Lipe is the southernmost island in Thailand, located in the Adang-Rawi archipelago of the Andaman Sea, about 60 kilometres from the mainland and just a few kilometres from the Malaysian border. This tiny island, only four square kilometres, has earned its reputation as Thailand’s Maldives thanks to its crystal-clear turquoise water, pristine coral reefs, and powdery white-sand beaches. Despite its growing popularity, Koh Lipe retains a laid-back, barefoot-luxury atmosphere that makes it feel worlds away from the busy beaches of Phuket or Koh Samui.

The Three Main Beaches

Pattaya Beach is the busiest, a long stretch of white sand on the south side of the island lined with resorts, restaurants, and bars. It is the heart of island life and where the walking street begins. Sunrise Beach, on the east side, faces the morning sun and is the best beach for watching the dawn paint the sky, as the name suggests. It is quieter and has a more relaxed feel, with a small sea gypsy village at its northern end. Sunset Beach, on the west side, is the smallest and most tranquil, a narrow strip of sand shaded by trees where you can watch the sun dip into the Andaman Sea in near solitude.

Snorkelling and Diving Paradise

Koh Lipe sits within the Adang-Rawi archipelago, which is part of Tarutao National Marine Park. The surrounding waters are home to some of the healthiest coral reefs in Thailand. Day-trip snorkelling tours (about 600-800 THB) take you to nearby islands like Koh Adang, Koh Rawi, and Koh Yang, where you can snorkel over living coral gardens teeming with clownfish, parrotfish, and sea turtles. For certified divers, there are dive shops on the island offering trips to deeper sites like Stonehenge and 8 Mile Rock, where you might see whale sharks between February and April.

Practical Tips for Visitors

  • Getting there: Speedboat from Pak Bara pier (1.5 hours, 1,200-1,500 THB) or from Langkawi, Malaysia (1 hour, seasonally). From Bangkok, fly to Hat Yai then take a minivan to Pak Bara (2 hours).
  • Season: The island is only accessible from November to April. From May to October, the monsoon brings rough seas and most accommodation closes entirely.
  • Accommodation: Budget bungalows from 800 THB, mid-range from 2,000 THB, and beachfront resorts from 4,000 THB. Book months in advance for peak season (December-February).
  • What to bring: Cash (one ATM on the island, often out of money), reef-safe sunscreen, snorkelling gear if you have it, and a waterproof bag for boat trips.
  • Getting around: The island is small enough to walk everywhere in 15-20 minutes. There are no cars, only a few motorbikes for locals. Wear flip-flops and embrace the barefoot lifestyle.

The walking street that connects Pattaya and Sunrise beaches is the social centre of the island. Every evening it comes alive with seafood restaurants, pancake stalls, massage shops, and small boutiques selling sarongs and handmade jewellery. The seafood here is some of the freshest in Thailand, caught that morning by the sea gypsy community and grilled right in front of you. A whole grilled barracuda with a papaya salad and a cold Chang beer costs about 300-400 THB, and it is one of the best meals you will have in Thailand.

One of the best day trips from Koh Lipe is to nearby Koh Adang, a larger, uninhabited island just 15 minutes away by long-tail boat. Koh Adang has a ranger station, a few basic campsites, and a viewpoint hike through the jungle that rewards you with a breathtaking panorama of Koh Lipe and the surrounding turquoise sea. Pack a picnic lunch and spend the day on your own private beach. The boats to Koh Adang leave from Pattaya Beach and cost about 200 THB round trip.

Koh Lipe is the kind of island that makes you cancel your onward travel plans. The combination of pristine beaches, world-class snorkelling, and the slow, island pace of life creates an addictive spell. It is not the easiest place to reach, and that is precisely what protects it. Come for three nights, and you will likely stay for a week. Just remember to bring enough cash, because the nearest ATM is a boat ride away.
